David Murphy

david murphyPrior to joining University College Cork (UCC) as a Computer Science lecturer in 1998, David Murphy was a multimedia engineer at Apple Computer. At UCC David helped introduce Multimedia as a discipline to the University. He is currently the Programme Director for the MSc in Interactive Media, and the BA Digital Humanities & Information Technology. His research interests are in the areas of Virtual Reality/Mixed Reality, Biosensors, HCI, and Spatial Sound. In 2019 David established the MAVRIC Lab (Mixed Augmented Virtual Reality and Immersive Computing) focusing on multimodal XR design and user interaction. This lab has undertaken various funded research projects, with international and industry collaborators, resulting in a number of PhD graduates. David is also a funded PI in the INSIGHT Research Centre, and the CONNECT Research Centre leading up research initiatives focused on Virtual, Augmented and Mixed Reality research. David is also a member of the international organisation VR First, EU XR4ALL, IEEE CTSoc HMI Technical Committee and the SIG Metaverse, the JVRB Technical Committee, ISO SC29 WG03/07 (MPEG), and was Co-Chair of the Universities & Colleges Committee of the international Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality Association (ARVRA) until 2022. David is also a journal reviewer for Springer's Multimedia Tools & Applications, the International Journal of Virtual and Augmented Reality (IJVAR), Frontiers in VR, Frontiers in Psychology, and the Journal of Virtual Reality & Broadcasting (JVRB). David is also a reviewer and programme committee member for various international conferences, including EuroGraphics, SIGCHI, ACM HCI, and the British HCI.
