A Message from the President

A Message from IEEE CTSoc President -

Our Society now officially called as the “IEEE Consumer Technology Society (CTSoc)”

Wahab Almuhtadi
President, IEEE Consumer Technology Society (CTSoc)

Dear IEEE Consumer Technology Society Members,

I am pleased to inform you that our Society has been now officially named as the "IEEE Consumer Technology Society (CTSoc)." The previous name "IEEE Consumer Electronics Society (CES)" is now part of our Society history.

We are proud of the history of our Society and evolvement of our Society’s name. As I stated in my President’s Messages (“Society Name Change - It Is The Time To Do It To Respond And Reflect To The Dynamic Changes In Industry!”, and “Overcoming Challenges and Reaching Common Objectives for Our Society’s Longevity” IEEE CE Magazine, Issue 4 of July 2019 and Issue 1of January 2019 respectively), our Society’s roots can be traced back to the time of Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell when the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) was formed on May 13, 1884, and more specifically when the invention and development of radio communications led to the formation of the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE) in 1912. Later on, the merger of AIEE and IRE in January, 1963 led to the establishment of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). And in 1976, the IEEE was restructured into Technical Societies which led to the formation of the IEEE Broadcast, Cable, and Consumer Electronics (BCCE) Society in 1976, and then in 1982 the IEEE Consumer Electronics Society (CES) was formed as an IEEE Society.

The consumer electronics industry has continuously grown as a result of advancement and rapid changes in the consumer electronics industry and in the global demand for smart devices and systems. To respond to these dynamic changes in technology, and to maintain our Society as a leading technical organization, our Society Board of Governors (BoG) on January 13, 2019 in Las Vegas, NV, USA, approved unanimously the Society name change from IEEE Consumer Electronics Society (CES) to IEEE Consumer Technology Society (CTSoc). This was followed by the approval of the IEEE Technical Activities Board (TAB) on June 21, 2019, and of the IEEE Board of Directors (BoD) on September 26, 2019. The implementation process of replacing the old name with the new name in all IEEE data bases, materials, systems and operations (conferences, publications, membership, standards, and finance) was completed by IEEE on August 16, 2020. And from now on our Society is called officially “IEEE Consumer Technology Society” with an abbreviation " CTSoc". Congratulations to all our Society members, affiliates and volunteers on this transformational step.

The Society’s field of interest has become highly multidisciplinary over the years, and the new name reflects the fast changing industry and emerging technologies.
And therefore, the CTSoc field of interest of IEEE is the interdisciplinary technologies, applications, manufacturing, and standards for products, services, systems, and architectures for consumers. IEEE CTSoc's conferences, transactions, magazine, technical activities, training and education, standards, and special interest groups (SIGs) focus on all aspects of the modeling, design, construction, testing, and end-use of mass-market electronics, systems, software, artificial intelligence, big data technology and services for advanced consumer products and services. The CTSoc will continue to be an important source of information on new and emerging technologies.

We are living in the world of "smart" intelligent devices and systems. To best reflect the nature of our Society, the Society now has a new logo that has been approved by CTSoc BoG and IEEE on September 28, 2020.

The logo represents "Human - Smart Consumer Devices/Systems Interaction and Synergy": It is the user interactions with technology with a view to better understanding and improving interoperability and compatibility between technology and its users. In order to build this trust by interacting with technology from the user's point of view, it requires a deep understanding of both human attitudes and technology. The humanized content includes:
  • Human-Machine Interaction and User Experience
  • Machine Learning, Deep Learning and AI in Smart Devices
  • Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Artificial Reality (touchless devices technology).
  • Smart Audio/Video System and Facial Precognition
  • Smartphones and Mobile Devices.
  • Smart Sensors and Wearable Devices.

As part of the reflection and response to the dynamic changes in consumer electronics industry, CTSoc has a new Mission Statement: "We innovate and bring consumer technologies to life", as well as a new Vision Statement: "The IEEE Consumer Technology Society (CTSoc) as a global leader inspires research, development, and deployment of cutting-edge technologies for consumer products for the advancement and benefit of humanity."

I recommend also to visit our Society website https://ctsoc.ieee.org/, it has been newly redesigned and it has a new content of useful information and resources. Let’s work together to keep our Society successful and vibrant.

Sincerely,

Dr. Wahab Almuhtadi, P.Eng., SMIEEE, EIC Fellow
President of the IEEE Consumer Technology Society (CTSoc)
